Clinometers

To finish off our angles unit, this week in maths Room 15 have been looking at clinometers. They each made their own clinometer using cardboard, straws, strings and a weight. We then used them to calculate the height of various tall objects around the school (a tree, the rugby post, the climbing frame and the playground).

To do this we first measured our eye height from the ground. We then measured the distance from the base of the object to our standing position. Finally, we used our clinometers to measure the angle to the top of the object. Once we gathered all of our measurements, we went back to class and drew scale drawings to calculate the height of the objects.

Algebraic Equations in Room 15

This week Room 15 have been learning about algebraic equations. They have done lots of work around forming equations from real life situations, solving equations and substituting values into equations.

Today they put their knowledge to the test and played a game which used their substituting skills. Each group was so engaged in their games they didn't even realise their photo was taken!

Hockey Sessions

Last week Room 15 were lucky to have 4 hockey coaching sessions. They were pretty sad that the weather on Friday meant that their last lesson was cancelled.
Overall lots of positive feedback on the experience - from students, teachers and coach!!

Each group produced a 'stained glass window' depicting the native bird that they studied. The results were fantastic!

Strike Workshop

Today started with a whole lot of  noise - the Wellington percussion group STRIKE performed to the school. They began by imitating a tropical rainforest - ably helped by HNI and continued to entertain us with 'fire" music,  drum solos from staff and students and original and creative pieces.
That wasn't the end for the Year 8's though.
Each class had an hour's workshop. As a group we learnt to perform an original piece. There were many rhythms to follow and sticks to watch but loads of fun! Well done to Molly  - whose stick work we had to follow on several occasions!
