Clinometers

To finish off our angles unit, this week in maths Room 15 have been looking at clinometers. They each made their own clinometer using cardboard, straws, strings and a weight. We then used them to calculate the height of various tall objects around the school (a tree, the rugby post, the climbing frame and the playground).

To do this we first measured our eye height from the ground. We then measured the distance from the base of the object to our standing position. Finally, we used our clinometers to measure the angle to the top of the object. Once we gathered all of our measurements, we went back to class and drew scale drawings to calculate the height of the objects.
