Financial Literacy

In case your child is coming home and asking about how much groceries cost, or how much a bond is, here is a look at our current Maths assignment!

Don't forget the sorted.org.nz

How do I make Sense of Cents? – Group Flatting Project

Scenario:
A group of you have decided to go flatting!! You are in your first year out of high school and are either studying at a Tertiary institute or have your first fulltime job, at the minimum wage.

Consider:
Where are you in New Zealand? Hawke’s Bay, Palmerston North, Dunedin etc.
What is your location??  How far away are you from your Tertiary Institution or job?
You have NOTHING except clothing and your parents’ best wishes – in the form of $1500!!!!
You can have up to $3000 saved.

Tasks:
Complete as an A4 size booklet or as a google presentation – one for the whole group

Title page: (“Freedom Flatting” or title of your own) and names of group members.

A Map of your area with the flat location, job location and Tertiary Institute location. Include other relevant details such as local bus routes, closest supermarket and ATM machine etc!!

Itemise everything that you purchase to set up your flat. You must have proof of all costs. For example cut out of the paper, brochures or computer print outs from web sites.  You are setting up a flat from scratch!!
Be aware that there are quite different costs for bond, electricity and water.

You need to feed yourselves. Work out your menu for the flat for the week and decide what groceries you would need to buy and how much they would cost. Itemise (Countdown website would be useful for you!)

Thursday Art

Today we were a small class as some students were involved in the Masterton Cultural Exchange. We took to the cities of the world and their skylines.
Keeping up with our Sustainability theme we used newspaper and scrap paper to create some art work.

Class thoughts on Sustainability

Today we had a bit of a reflection on key pieces of information we had picked up over the last two weeks, relating to food sustainability:

We followed that discussion up by looking at two key questions:
"What problems to we currently have feeding the world?" and "What is happening in the world to help people who can't feed themselves properly?"

Maisie's comment on last Wednesday's visit

Last Wednesday, 6 Room 11 students (Pip, Annika, Ellie, Julian, Tamar and I) visited 3 care centres for the disabled to see how they lived and how hard everyday activities were for them.
In the first picture it shows some of the art that some of them made in the day centre. (The day centre was for the less severe cases and they went there from 9am till 3pm)

The second picture is the  hoist that they used to transport the patients who couldn't walk in and out of bed.

The third picture is of a girl we met called Allanah who lives in the last home we went to.

The  second to  last picture is Pip in the sensory room (sitting on the water bed) The sensory room is a room in which the people (since they can’t use complicated objects) can sit and watch the lights and listen to the music. The last picture is of the lights in the sensory room.

The visit was great and I think we all got to see how hard their lives are and how grateful we should be that we have the lives we have.

The first week of the last term!

This week Room 11 has settled pretty quickly back into their daily routine.
Our main Inquiry focus for this last term, revolves around the idea of SUSTAINABILITY. We have been looking at what the word means literally and as a concept.

Pip and Eli - thinking about their local environment

Tamar's Pic collage

For Art on Thursday we thought about recycling paper some of the paper we have in and around the classroom and wondered what we could create! Here are some of the classes pieces using recycled paper and old magazines.

Writing in Week 10

This week our writing task has been to publish a "Treasure" story. There have been some wonderful collaborations going on, as well as some terrific work by individuals. It is amazing how one broad topic can lead in so many creative directions.
We talked about the importance of a plan - particularly important so that the writer has an idea of where to head, rather than staying stuck on the openings! We also talked about the need for a problem and seeking a resolution to that issue.
So here are some great openings ( Just a sample!)....

The ship was swaying side to side but Oli knew that the sturdy ship would see it through. Oli was a crew member on an immigrant ship that was travelling to Australia from England and it was half way there. The ship was called the Wave Rider. The hustle and bustle aboard the ship was being caused by a bunch of immigrants that were worried about the incoming storm. When there was shouting many of the crew members got up to see what was going on.

The last of the evening sun filtered between the ghostly stones of the ruins as a laughing child darted between the fallen stones.
"Emily, where are you? You're starting to freak me out," called an auburn haired teen. "We need to get back. It's not funny anymore."
"Come find me," Emily giggled.
The girl, Grace, turned frantically around, searching.
Her voice grew steadily higher as she said,"No really it's starting to get dark and this place is really creepi..."
She trailed off. A pinprick of blue light had appeared in front of her.
"Emily, we need to get out of here now," she said as she backed cautiously away. Emily's head popped over the stones and her dark eyes grew wide in shock. The light began to pulse and swirl growing larger and faster, the striking blue light reflecting off Emily's glasses.
"Emily run!" screeched Grace, seconds before the light imploded in an array of turquoise beams, the earth swallowing the ruins and Grace with it as it went.

Once upon a time there lived three great pirates, who were stuck on a boat in the middle of the sea. They were searching for an adventure of their own and hoping to find booty (treasure). Their names were Octoe, Guts and Rodger. Octoe was the maturest out of the group. He was an Old Salt (experienced sailor) who kept things in Ship Shape. Guts and Rodger on the other hand were the complete opposite of Octoe, both were always fooling around and mucking about. They would always fight and argue with each other, and they did NOT get along with one another. All three were hugely competitive and they would have individual competitions to see who was the best out of them all. Off they set ,on their journey.

On a moonlit beach, a shadow flickered on the sand. The shadow continued to move at a slow but steady pace.
“I haven’t seen you in a while,” came a voice.
“I need you.  NOW!!!”

We had been having a hard time lately and what was about to happen didn't help at all.
It all started on the stormiest seas i had ever seen in my lifelong career of sailing and we were nearing a patch of jagged rocks that could easily shred our ship to pieces, never to be                   recovered.

“Come back” Darrell shouted, his words getting lost in the wind. “Noooo,” Darrell said watching the ship slowly drift into the distance. Thinking he was going to die in the middle of the ocean Darrel could see a glimpse of a small island in the distance. After hours of tireless swimming Darrel finally made it to the lost island.

Three years later…

What's happening in Technology at the moment!

Last week I asked Pip and Flynn to record something from their technology classes . They did a great job and put some photos together for this post.

As you can see at the moment Room 11 is either with Mr Sutherland in Wood and Plastics or with Mrs Houghton in Electronics.

Keith Haring update.

Today was a non-technology Thursday, so we resumed our lesson on Keith Haring and his art works. The students were given a choice of activities and we saw the 1 1/2 hours fly by! My highlight was the engagement shown by the Room 11 boys!

More Social Dancing!

What a wet week! Today we had a Social Dance session with the three Year 7 Sheppard classes. It was so great to see the improvements from yesterday even! Here's a Pic collage of some Maxina moves!
You may see that it was a mufti day today. Our theme was based on our upcoming school "production/film" based on HNI's last 40 years. We were invited to come along today in our 70's, 80's and 90's gear!
Smart looking lot aren't we!

Thank you, Mrs Smith!

It is great when a teacher passes on to you a really good idea to share with your class.Mrs Smith has given me a really fun lesson and one which the class has really got stuck into!
We started by watching part of a documentary on Keith Haring to see how his Art transformed the subways of New York!(See earlier post!).
Then the students were handed a sheet with some of his symbols. The next step was to roll a dice and whatever number came up they had to copy that on to their page. Only problem was if they made a mistake they couldn't erase it!

Ours for the day!

Eli and Alice have the Fullwood Shield "on loan" today... as members of the HNI team who recently won the Year 8 Hawke's Bay Mathletics competition !!

Heard of Tristan da Cunha?

Over the last couple of weeks Room 11 has been investigating the remote island of Tristan da Cunha. We have looked into different aspects of its history, geography and what we think it would be like to live there. Under this term's "change maker" inquiry topic we have thought carefully about how the choice to live there has lead to changes in the lives of Tristinans! It would certainly come under the "GRIT, GUTS and GENIUS" label!

The final task is to think about the changes that might occur there in the future and what or who would cause these. Today saw the students thinking about what it could mean to have more tourists visiting and how tourism to the island could be"encouraged". We decided on a radio advertisement ,backed up by a promotional poster and magazine ad. Several of the boys in the class are heading in a slightly different direction. For the promotional poster of the island they are recreating Tristan da Cunha using minecraft!!

Youth Expo

On Wednesday most of Room 11 attended the Youth Expo at the Napier War Memorial building. It was a really good excursion and the class got a great deal from it (including information and a range of badges and other "freebies")!
There were several speakers and presenters. HNHS students set the scene with a "party" gone wrong. This was followed by presentations from the Red Cross, St John's Ambulance, the Police and the NZ Fire Service.
Students also had the opportunity to look at exhibits from a range of organisations and had to complete a quiz sheet to be eligible for prizes. Eli received a McDonalds' voucher for his memory skills.
Mike King was both the highlight and guest speaker. His humour and honesty struck the right note with all of the students.
