One of today's tasks was to find a song we could "adapt"as a theme song for our House - Sheppard House.
There was an amazing variety of choices but also lots of engagement!

First Day of the year!
Welcome to the first of the posts from Room 11 2015 :)
This morning the class walked into a room full of balloons. Inside each balloon was a bit of an ice breaker so we would all have a little something to share with our neighbour. It is amazing how hard some balloons are to pop ... and how easy.

Financial Literacy
In case your child is coming home and asking about how much groceries cost, or how much a bond is, here is a look at our current Maths assignment!

How do I make Sense of Cents? – Group Flatting Project
Scenario:
A group of you have decided to go
flatting!! You are in your first year out of high school and are either
studying at a Tertiary institute or have your first fulltime job, at the
minimum wage.
Consider:
Where are you in New
Zealand ? Hawke’s Bay, Palmerston North,
Dunedin etc.
What is your location?? How far
away are you from your Tertiary Institution or job?
You have NOTHING except clothing and your parents’ best wishes – in the
form of $1500!!!!
You can have up to $3000 saved.
Tasks:
Complete as an A4 size booklet or
as a google presentation – one for the whole group
Title page: (“Freedom Flatting” or title of your own) and names
of group members.
A Map of your area with the
flat location, job location and Tertiary Institute location. Include other
relevant details such as local bus routes, closest supermarket and ATM machine
etc!!
Itemise everything that you
purchase to set up your flat. You must have proof of all costs. For example cut
out of the paper, brochures or computer print outs from web sites. You are setting up a flat from scratch!!
Be aware that there are quite different costs for bond, electricity and
water.
You need to feed yourselves. Work out your menu for the flat for the
week and decide what groceries you would need to buy and how much they would
cost. Itemise (Countdown website would be useful for you!)

Thursday Art
Today we were a small class as some students were involved in the Masterton Cultural Exchange. We took to the cities of the world and their skylines.
Keeping up with our Sustainability theme we used newspaper and scrap paper to create some art work.

Class thoughts on Sustainability
Today we had a bit of a reflection on key pieces of information we had picked up over the last two weeks, relating to food sustainability:
We followed that discussion up by looking at two key questions:
"What problems to we currently have feeding the world?" and "What is happening in the world to help people who can't feed themselves properly?"

Maisie's comment on last Wednesday's visit
Last Wednesday, 6 Room 11 students (Pip, Annika, Ellie, Julian, Tamar and I) visited 3 care centres for the disabled to see how they lived and how hard everyday activities were for them.
In the first picture it shows some of the art that some of them made in the day centre. (The day centre was for the less severe cases and they went there from 9am till 3pm)
The second picture is the hoist that they used to transport the patients who couldn't walk in and out of bed.
The third picture is of a girl we met called Allanah who lives in the last home we went to.
The second to last picture is Pip in the sensory room (sitting on the water bed) The sensory room is a room in which the people (since they can’t use complicated objects) can sit and watch the lights and listen to the music. The last picture is of the lights in the sensory room.
The visit was great and I think we all got to see how hard their lives are and how grateful we should be that we have the lives we have.

The first week of the last term!
This week Room 11 has settled pretty quickly back into their daily routine.
Our main Inquiry focus for this last term, revolves around the idea of SUSTAINABILITY. We have been looking at what the word means literally and as a concept.
For Art on Thursday we thought about recycling paper some of the paper we have in and around the classroom and wondered what we could create! Here are some of the classes pieces using recycled paper and old magazines.
